Separate the wheat from the chaffe

Just because a cosmetic sports a “natural” label doesn’t mean it’s truly natural. Here are some guidelines to help you discern what’s real—and what’s not.

Despite many existing certifications, it is truly not easy to identify real natural cosmetics without any special training. This is because each approval is based on different criteria. Take Ecocert as an example. This seal is widely spread in Europe. Ecocert demands that at least 95 per cent of the ingredients must originate from nature. However, the remaining 5 per cent can be artificially made. So examine natural cosmetics carefully before your next purchase. The following should be part of your critical check:

1. Read the ingredients list. These are typically indicated with their botanical names in Latin. But many reliable manufacturers also write them in English. This helps to find out which ingredients the product contains. If you are not so familiar with the names, use the internet as a research tool.

2. Look for dark packaging, because high-quality natural cosmetics are generally photo-sensitive. Of course, the outside packaging should be
environmentally friendly, too.

3. Visit the manufacturer's website and read the information carefully.
Manufacturers who are truly committed to natural cosmetics design the
entire production process to be sustainable. Brochures and the website
should contain appropriate references and information.

4. Analyze the price. Remember how it is when you purchase food: The

better the quality of the ingredients, the more expensive the price.
